In short, the more angled an incoming shot is to the surface of your armor, the more armor the shot needs to travel through in order to penetrate, which means you armor becomes more effective. In order to understand sidescraping, you need first understand armor angling, which is discussed in this post. Sidscraping means reversing from cover while using the angled side of your tank to minimize the time you are vulnerable to incoming shots.
